Pattern and J.D.

Here is my first attempt at a weekly pattern-thingamajig. Not sure what it is.
And also, I've been thinking of an idea for a short animation- here's a page of Salingers I've done to practice drawing Salinger. I think he came out looking more like me than anything.

Soviet Cookbook

Check out these great images from a Soviet Cookbook. I found it in an arts bookstore--the one on Alberta.

found figurative stuff

I ran across a few sketches I did a little while ago. I was working on minimizing linework.
Did you ever watch that documentary Buck? About a master horseman. It's really good--it reminded me of some of the country folk I knew growing up  in MT. The last one is Jackie Robinson, Elvis, and Charlie Chaplin

Mush Room

My sister was cooking the other night, and I saw these mushroom stems and thought they looked really beautiful. I tried to paint with watercolor on hot-press which was interesting. (I am used to cold-press). It gives it this washy effect and it looks really different when it dries.
I later found out that it wasn't really a shitake mushroom but a portobello. oh well. (google doesn't know how to spell either of those, and neither do I).

Playing arouuuuund

So I made myself a rule to try and spend 3 hours a day doing something art related, and trying to find styles for my next animated experiment. When I can't think of anything, I copy other people's styles and ideas. Here are some little ridiculous sketches inspired by textile books, printmaking books, and bird guides o the northwest.

I think you might like the one with the Roman warrior or whatnot, giving the finger to those guys riding a tiger. (I took some liberties in copying that one from a Victorian tapestry).

YUP!

chore this!!!

i am posting a response immediately! well, actually, i'm procrastinating really badly on writing this thingamaling that is due tomorrow. anyways in general i just get lazy in uploading photos :/ look at these felt strawberries i made!!! i think i'm going to teach a workshop on them
I also liked how the strawberries looked while in production. I think i could make a cool abstract, stuffed, felt sculpture.
Like a Philip Guston painting?
Only soft and polyfilled

In other news, today I spotted this giant old paper mache shoe (...paper ma'shoe?)  on my lunch break today! it was in this vintage shop in the Pearl. the owner was this older fellow who was balding and wearing glasses at the end of his nose and reading this morning's newspaper, just as i would expect--the monolithic shoe, i did not expect!!!
where did it come from? was it ever a home to someone? hmm. i think there are many possibilities for the past of this shoe

It's been too long

Jeez, I hope our blog is not turning into a chore! I think art goes well as long as you got the feeling that you are just goofing around and it's all just nonsense, and that only secretly it means so much to you that you can't do without it.
That said, here are some sketches I made on a napkin at Max's tavern. That place is something else.
Below that is a self-portrait' circa 2006. notice the regression.

Junk Mail 1.1

So I let my little student in on our project, and together we decided to build a ship out of most of the junk. Out of the scrap-drawing she made a necklace and I modeled it :

We didn't make the squirrel on page 13, but we did try to make the icy wonderland. we filled plastic gloves with water and tried to make them into shapes to freeze. results pending.

Here is a small film we shot yesterday, as we tried to sail the ship. I also brought ghost cat, and we shot some scenes with him. there are also a few scenes in an environmental theme that might turn into a longer feature-film project.

I will begin to search for some good junk to send to you!
